Magnetotherapy

Magnetotherapy treatment is an effective and painless method of treating soft tissue and bone injuries.

What is magnetotherapy?

Magnetotherapy is a physical medicine procedure that allows treatment with the application of magnetic field. This method uses the positive effects of low-frequency alternating magnetic field on the body. Unlike magnetostimulation, it consists of using a higher intensity magnetic field for continuous or pulsed mode. Magnetotherapy supports regenerative processes – accelerates bone union, relieves edema and pain as well as shorten the time needed for recovery. It enables effective pain and edema treatment, even during post-surgery healing phase.

The magnetotherapy is successfully used in both rehabilitation and pain therapy, but also in dentistry, angiology, orthopedics, urology, rheumatology, immunology, otolaryngology, allergology, gynecology, neurology, dermatology, gastroenterology, sports and aesthetic medicine. The magnetic field stimulates the synthesis of collagen, which is a protein that is a part of our skin, of tendons and even of the cornea of the eye. That is why magnetotherapy is successfully used, among others, in the treatment of skin, eye and motor organs injuries.

During the treatment, the magnetic field penetrates the body reaching its every cell, where, by acting on the structure of cell membranes, it supports cell repair processes, facilitating the penetration of oxygen and nutrients into its interior.

The biological effects of magnetic field effects on tissues include action on oxygen free radicals, cellular proliferation and apoptosis, action on nucleic acid replication and transcription, and protein synthesis, as well as modification of cellular signal transmission.

How does magnetotherapy help patients?

Magnetoherapy has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-edema and regenerative effects. In addition, osteogenetic effects and therefore acceleration of bone healing are mentioned among the biological effects of the magnetic field. Magnetotherapy devices are used in hospitals, doctor’s offices, clinics, rehabilitation centers and many other health care facilities. It brings relief to patients by supporting wound healing and tissue regeneration. The effect of magnetotherapy on the body is based on the use of pulses with a frequency and intensity adapted to the individual needs of the patient.

The positive effect of magnetotherapy on soft tissues and bone tissue is used in the pain relief therapy and acceleration of healing process after orthopedic treatment procedures and surgeries. This means that low-frequency magnetic field therapy is an effective and non-invasive method of patient rehabilitation. Applied in the case of degenerative diseases, it is able to inhibit the degenerative process that is taking place in them.

What diseases does magnetotherapy cure?

The low-frequency magnetic field acting on a selected area of the body enables very good penetration, which biostimulates the body, supporting soft tissue regeneration processes and bone union. According to the conducted researches, magnetotherapy significantly accelerates the healing process in the following diseases:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders such as discopathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee arthrosis, impaired bone union (fracture conditions), degenerative changes in the spine and joints, fibromyalgia, joint cartilage damage, Achilles tendonitis, rotator cuff muscle damage, osteoporosis, pseudoarthrosis , rheumatoid arthritis, muscle inflammation, pelvic pain.
  • Wounds and ulcers, e.g. leg ulcers in the course of diabetes, postoperative inflammation, postoperative pain and edema, burns.
  • Nervous system diseases, including diabetic polyneuropathy (pain and paraesthesia), nerve damage, cranial and peripheral nerve dysfunction, stroke status, multiple sclerosis.
  • Cardiovascular diseases, e.g. in the recovery from myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, and hypertension.
  • Pain therapy associated with migraines and vasomotor headaches.
  • Skin and soft tissue diseases, e.g. bacterial infections, keloids.
  • Eye diseases such as optic atrophy, corneal infectious diseases.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders such as colon hypersensitivity, chronic pancreatitis, diarrhea and flatulence.
  • Weakeness of the body by restoring vitality.
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract diseases, in particular by alleviating discomfort and reducing the period of illness.

How do patients feel the magnetic field during the treatment?

Magnetotherapy is a painless and comfortable treatment. It can be performed through clothing, and also – if the treatment concerns an immobilized limb – in an orthopaedic cast. For most patients, the treatment is imperceptible, some people feel a gentle warmth in the area of application of the magnetic field. Astar PhysioMG devices are equipped with Sensory Indicators of Magnetic Field Activity that allow patients to feel mild vibrations that indicate magnetic field activity.

Magnetotherapy – indications and contraindications

Magnetotherapeutic procedures are intended for adult patients. In minors treatments can be carried out only at the express recommendation of a doctor, after elimination of all contraindications. Medical consultation also requires performing procedures for patients with implanted electronic devices (e.g. pacemaker) and metal implants. Equally important is medical consultation for people who have epileptic episodes, pathological changes in EEG or after neurosurgical operations. If the treatment involves wounds, bedsores, ulcers or burns in the exudate phase, the area undergoing magnetotherapy should be adequately treated (e.g. by applying a gauze dressing).

Magnetotherapy can cause sleep disturbances, so in particular in the elderly, it is worth to refrain from carrying out procedures in the evening if possible.

For people with respiratory illnesses and / or breathing difficulties, a semi-sitting position should be used to increase patient comfort during the procedure. Contraindications for treatments are: cancer, gastrointestinal bleeding, pregnancy, thyrotoxicosis, juvenile diabetes, pulmonary tuberculosis, severe viral, fungal or bacterial infections. Magnetotherapy procedures are also not performed on patients under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

What magnetotherapy equipment is chosen by specialists?

Magnetotherapy devices are an important element of the equipment in specialized physiotherapy centers. The most common equipment for magnetotherapy are solenoid or local applicators. Solenoid applicators are coils whose diameter usually ranges from 20 to 70 cm. The exception is the latest applicator CS75 from the PhysioMG line, whose diameter is up to 75 cm. Local applicators are small, come in various shapes and are most often attached to the patient’s body with straps. Local applicators are spread out on the couch or placed in the right place on the patient’s body.

In the most advanced model of the PhysioMG 827 magnetotherapy unit, it is possible to perform therapy with the simultaneous use of two magnetic field applicators (Dual Mode) – a solenoid applicator, which strengthens the patient’s entire body and a plate applicator, having local action, focused on stimulation of a specific area of the body. In addition, by using visual and sensory indicators of field activity, we indicate the area where the therapy is performed and we enable the feeling that the magnetic field actually appears in this place.

When choosing a magnetotherapy device, it is worth paying attention to the safety and quality of the product, as well as the availability of after-sales service and the technologies used. Modern Astar magnetic field therapy devices have a built-in “self-test” procedure that allows you to independently verify their performance status, saving time and guaranteeing safety of use. Another feature of the professional device for magnetotherapy treatment is the possibility of using many treatment programs created to support the work of the therapist.
