The name TECAR comes from the Spanish phrase [Transferencia Eléctrica Capacitiva y Resistiva], meaning ‘capacitive-resistive current transfer’. In the literature, one can also often come across the terms: capacitive-resistive diathermy and radiofrequency diathermy.
Unlike traditional diathermy, TECAR therapy involves the application of energy to tissues through direct contact between electrodes and the patient’s body. The effect on the human body depends on the selected mode of operation of the device and the electrical conductivity of the tissues, which determine the depth of energy penetration in the patient’s body.
